La troisiemme semaine de mars a été exceptionellement chaude. Pas douce, mais chaude. Des températures normales de juillet. Des records de températures pulvérisés 5 jours d'affilée. J'ai évidemment profité de ces 5 jours afin de commencer ma saison de travail. Cette fois ci, je compte bien terminer le dessus du bateau, le plancher et le cockpit, tout ce qui est exposé aux éléments, afin de pouvoir démonter une bonne fois pour toutes, cette charpente et cette bache qui recouvre tout le voilier depuis l'automne 2007. Je commence donc par tout ce travail fastidieux de tirage de joints sur toute la périphérie du plancher autour de la cabine, de l'avant jusqu'a l'arrière. Il s'agit de sceller la tranche du mince contreplaqué qui a été appliqué sur le vieux plancher existant, en appliquant une bande de fibre de verre qui recouvre un pouce de ce plancher, un rayon faisant la transition entre le plancher et la coque, et la coque. Puis, une fois que l'époxy de cette bande de fibre de verre a bien durci, j'aqpplique un pate de finition a base de micro-billes, afin de masquer les joints des bandes de fibre de verre sur le plancher. Tout ce travail de tirage de joints doit obligatoirement etre fait avant de penser a peinturer le plancher.
En parlant de peinture, Citadel ne vend plus de peinture polyuréthane a deux composants, ni de vernis d'ailleurs. Le gouvernement fédéral a passé des lois cet hiver, relativement a certains solvants pouvant etre dangereux pour la santé. Citadel ne peut donc plus manufacturer leurs peintures et vernis polyuréthanes a deux composants. Cela me contraint a rechercher d'autres produits et je crois bien que je vais expérimenter les produits Glass-Shield, dont on m'a beaucoup parlé en bien. J'avais beaucoup de difficulté a bien travailler avec la peinture de Citadel. Je crois que leur formulation était avant tout optimisée pour une application au fusil, et tenter de l'appliquer au rouleau et pinceau faisait en sorte que j'en mettais toujours soit trop ou pas assez. Et de plus, leur peinture durcissait au bout de une demi-heure seulement, et ce temps pouvait diminuer encore avec la chaleur et l'humidité.
D'autre part, Citadel a mis sur le marché une nouvelle formule d'époxy, la 14-13. Ces caractéristiques seraient un temps de travail d'environ une heure, pas d'odeur, et une viscosité comparable a la 14-02. J'ai hate de m'en procurer un format d'essai et d'expérimenter avec ce produit.
J'ai également fini par mettre au propre le dessin de mon nouveau balcon de proue. Celui actuellement en place ne me plait pas pour plusieurs raisons. Je devrais avoir mon nouveau balcon au début de mai.
Aujourd'hui c'est un anniversaire bien spécial. Ca fait 100 ans que le Titanic sombrait, emportant avec lui plus de 1500 personnes par près de 4000 metres de fond. Ce qui doit rappeler a tous et chacun, que nul ne peut prétendre etre insubmersible, indestructible, a l'épreuve de tout, etre au dela des éléments. Il y aura toujours une vague, un coup de vent, un récif, quelque part, quand on ne s'y attendra le moins, qui saura se montrer plus fort que ce que l'on avait anticipé.

We just had a very calm winter, with few snowfalls and mild temperatures. I went only once at the marina to remove accumulated snow on the tarp covering the boat and even there was not enough snow to really justify it.
The third week of march was exceptionally hot. Not mild, I mean, hot. Average temperatures for a month of july. Temperature records were pulverized 5 days in a row. I obviously took advantage of these 5 days to start my working season. This time, I intend to finish the top part of the boat, all the floor around the cabin and the cockpit, and everything that is exposed to the elements, so that I can once and for all, dismantle that wooden framework and tarp protecting the boat since fall 2007. So I start by that tedious task of doing all the joint finishing between the edges of the floor and the hull, all around the cabin from the bow to the stern. I have to seal the edge of the thin plywood that I applied over the old floor, with a strip of fiberglass cloth that overlaps the floor 1 inch, the radius between the floor and the hull, and the hull. Once the epoxy of that fiberglass strip has set, I then apply a finishing putty made of microballoons, to hide the fiberglass joints on the floor. All that joint finishing must be done before starting to think about painting the floor.
Talking about paints, Citadel no longer sells 2-components Polyurethane paints, nor varnishes either. The federal government passed a bill last winter, relevent to certains thinners, which could be hazardous to health. So Citadel can no longer manufacture their 2-components Polyurethane paints and varnishes. That forces me to look for other suppliers and I believe I'll give a try to the Glass-Shield products, of which I have heard a lot of positive comments. Besides, I had a lot of difficulties working with the Citadel paints. I believe their paint composition was optimized for spray application, and attempting to apply it with rollers and brushes was making me putting either too little or too much. Furthermore, the paint was setting after 30 minutes only, sometimes even less with temperature or humidity.
On the other hand, Citadel has released a new epoxy formula, the 14-13. Its main caracteristics would be a pot life of about one hour, no odours, and a viscosity similar to the 14-02. I am looking forward to get a sample and try it.
I also finished drawing the plan for my new bow pulpit. I don't like the one actually in position for many reasons. I'll get the new one in early may.
Today is a special birthday. Its been 100 years since the Titanic went down, brigning with her more than 1500 persons near 4000 meters below. This should remind to everyone that none can claim to be unsinkable, undestructible, capable of withstanding everything, to be behond the elements. There will always be a wave, a gust of wind, a reef, somewhere, where one will expect the least, that will be stronger than what one has ever anticipated.
